POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

It is a policy of the provincial Ministry of Education that adults with a disability whose needs can be met by a public educational institution will have reasonable access to appropriate learning opportunities. The responsibility for the administration and delivery of adult special education services and programs rests with individual institutions. A contact person at each college works in conjunction with the counselling department and may hold the position of Special Needs Counsellor.

Services available to students with disabilities at community colleges throughout BC include general services such as assistance with registration and admission procedures, orientation tours, information on accessibility, special programs and services. The more specialized services may include formal and informal assessment to identify learning strengths and needs, instructional recommendations, ordering taped books, and library research assistance. Specialized equipment is also available at some colleges. Most places have facilities such as handyDART, handicapped parking, and a students with a disability association.

Some assistance is available, through SET-BC, for obtaining technical aids for post-secondary students.

Programs vary from college to college. Most community colleges have available for students an ACCESS AND RESOURCE HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES. Contact the Special Needs Counsellor at individual colleges for a copy and/or more information. We have included a list of contact persons in post-secondary institutions located throughout the province.

You may contact the Ministry for programs offered throughout the province at:
